The Surin Elephant Show is held in the third weekend of November.It
is one of the biggest event of this town and it'sInternationally famous.
This annual event brings crowds of visitors where over 100 trained
elephants are assembled. Among features are wild elephant hunts, tugs
of war, demonstrations of log hauling skills, and parades of elephants.
Prasat Hin Chom Phra a small stone castle located about 28 Kilometers
from Surin town. Alarge Buddha image is enshrined in front of the
main structure.
Prasat Muang Thi is 16 kms from Surin on the way
to Sri khoraphum on highway no.226. Three square brick pagodas were
part of five on the same base.
Prasat Ban Prasat Sanctuary is at Tambon Phlai, 5
kilometres from the district office on the way to Surin. The only
remaining structure is the laterite wall and ancient pool, which is
to the east of the site.
Prasat Ban Phluang was built around the 16th-17th Buddhist century.
Althought this sanctuary is small, it has very beautiful detailed
designs and was renovated recently. .It is a little over thirty kilometers
from Surin. The site has 4 pagodas in a rectangular laterite base.
Each pagoda had a square shape and is made of sandstone with floral
and human figure designs.
Prasat Si Khoraphumis locate about 35 kilometers from Surin. It has
5 pagodas on the same base. Each is about 30 metres high. The site
was built around the 17th Buddhist century.
The Elephant village at Ban Ta Klang on Highway no.214.It's about
60 km from Surin. The locals here are called the Suai people. The
former occupation of these people was to round up, train, and raise
elephants. Most elephants here are trained to perform in the annual
Surin Elephant Round-up.Ban
The Basketry Village, Ban Buthom, is located around 14 kilometers
from the province on the Highway 226 (Surin - Sikhoraphumroute). This
village produces ratan baskets of various types. Basketry shops line
can be found on both sides of the road.
The Silverware Villages, Ban Khwao Sinarin and Ban Chok, areIocated
on Highway 214 with a 4 kilometers right turn between Km. 14 -15.
These villages produce an assorted silver ornaments such as belts,
necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings and watches. You can directly
buy from them.
